MTB ride at Bear Valley on Sunday, July 1
« on: June 27, 2007, 11:03:33 AM »
Mr Mud and I are planning on doing a MTB ride at Bear Valley this Sunday, July 1.  Anyone else interested?

For people who have biked there, do you have any maps or directions or links for us? We've never ridden there. Some pointers would be nice.
Inch by inch, I will get there.

Are you going for the most brutal climbs, distance, or fun single track.  I may be up Sunday but I doubt it.  Let me know I can set up a good ride.  The bike shop has a guide book and maps and can give you up to date advice.  Jeff

OK here goes....   First out and back - Upper and Lower Tamerack and back to Bear Valley for coffee. Then Multi use trail to  Lake Alpine and then down Lodgeplole to Granite slabs and back to Bear Valley.  Then up Multi use to a  right turn on Emmigrant trail and then a left off Emmigrant to Osborn Ridge to North Alpine. Then go around North Alpine to Cape Horn. Ride Cape Horn as an out and back if you feel up to it.   Then South Alpine to Slick Rock Trail , a quick right on Sick Rock then a left onto Emmigrant Trail  and up to Osborn Ridge (again)(right turn this time)  and back down  to Multi use then Bear Valley or just head down  (Emmigrant). I know this sound confusing but if  someone  at the bike shop expains it to you or if you look at maps it will expain itself.  Feel free to Pm me or post again and I will try to Expain more clearly.  Both Jody and Paul at the shop can help you.  Jeff

Hey, it looks if I may be up there on Sunday.  What time will you be there?  The usually meeting spot for most riders is the gas station/sport shop at the BV entrance.  Calminty Joans is a good beakery in Arnold for bread or evil donuts on the way up.  Most who post here are climbers - so if you are, there is  good bouldering and short one pitch climbs around here- throw in the shoes and harnesses.

We will try to be at the bike shop (the same thing as the gas station/sport shop?) at BV around 9am.  Hope it's open by then. I'll definitely check out Calminty Joans on the way. I love good bakeries.

We will be climbing at Pinns tomorrow and will probably head up in the direction of Bear Valley after that and camp somewhere on the way. So we probably will not be able to get online.  We can be reached at 650-224-8997 where there is cellphone reception.

Anyone else? If you wake up on Sunday morning and have a strong urge to MTB at BV. Join us. The more the merrier.

Most who post here are climbers...

I'm not sure about that. There are separate boards for climbing and biking for a reason.  :D
Inch by inch, I will get there.

I can't make it this Sunday. It is my anniversary and I am sure I would be in the Dog house if I went. LOL.  I am planning to be up there next weekend.  Have fun and enjoy.

Glad to see you made it home safely and had fun.  I was asleep by 9:15.  Time for a morning ride before I have to do my chores.  Tio Stiinkt

An awesome tour indeed.  Uncle Stinky (Jeff S.) is great! To us, he is a god-send.  The MTB guidebook in the sports shop is sold out. The trails in the area are more than confusing. Jeff is a talking guidebook. He knows every trail and every rock in the area.  We are so lucky to have hooked up with him (thanks to THIS forum). :)

We did a little over 15 miles.  If it were just Jeff and Mr Mud, they could have easily covered twice as much ground. But they talked about climbing and biking and stuff while waiting for me, and did not seem to mind the wait so much. They were both extremely patient.

I think we did Emmigrant, North Pine, South Pine, Slick Rock, Osborn Ridge trails. Some sections were a little too technical for me. So I went either really slow, or just walked.  Mr Mud and I were both impressed with Jeff's technique. He rode through lots of tough sections.

For all the photos, please visit the gallery. Following are just a few.

Uncle Stinky led us to many vista points for great scenery.

Uncle Stinky took great photos. His framing is unique.

Thanks for the nice words and good company during the ride, and putting up the photos so quickly. :)  Cool Photos of Mr Mud's new route too.  Here are the trails we rode.  Multi use to North Lake Alpine, to Cape Horn (up and back), South Lake Alpine to Slick Rock Jeep Trial, up Emmigrant Trail and up and over Osborn Ridge Trail, and then down Lodgepole to the Granite Slabs.  Just taking a break from packing the car and heading back up.  We still should be there next Saturday.  Jeff

We are planning to head up on Sunday July 8th.   Let me know who is going to be there and maybe we all can hook up.
