Calaveras Dome - Looking for Guidebook or Topo
« on: September 09, 2022, 12:00:27 PM »
I'm planning on climbing Calaveras Dome and possibly Hammer Dome as well, and have been looking around for a guidebook or topo that I can use to supplement the information on Mountain Project. I can get by without it, but it would definitely be nice to have.

I found that Mike Arechiga wrote a guidebook 'Climbers Guide to Calaveras Dome' (https://mikeclimbingdude.wordpress.com/2018/04/18/flash-drive-publisher/), so I sent him an email a few days ago and are waiting to hear back.

In the meantime, I figured someone on here might be able to point me to something. Any help is appreciated!

Hi Stu and welcome to Mudn'Crud.

I've got some Cal Dome stuff that covers at least the basics; maybe a little more than the basics. Have you heard of the 1980s vintage John Harlin guidebook to select parts of the west coast (back when there were one third as many climbing areas as there are now)? It has a chapter on Cal Dome.

If you want help, make a second post on this thread that says:"climbing at Pinnacles is fantastic" three times. And mean it   ;)  :)

Oh and email me at home: mtnyoung AT gmail etc...

I, Stu, do declare the following to be unequivocally true and will stand by this statement until the end of time.

Climbing at Pinnacles is fantastic
Climbing at Pinnacles is fantastic
Climbing at Pinnacles is fantastic

Just to really prove I mean it, here's some shots of me and my buddy climbing Lava Falls a few weekends ago:

My first outdoor climbing was in Pinnacles and it's taught me a lot. Shout out to Noel (I think that's his name) who we met in the West Side parking lot a few weekends ago. He suggested we check out this forum and gave us a bunch of beta on other good climbing. Then he set off to do some rebolting, so he's the real MVP.

I'll definitely look into the John Harlin guidebook and shot ya an email! Thanks Brad!!

I was cracking up at your photo with a sweatshirt. That climb cooks once you get over the initial crux.

Noal is the goods.
I'm sure he was out there this weekend doing his thing.

We'd probably be back out there too if it were not for my double vision and this damned virus - although I have become so "functional" with my double vision that I could probably handle some easy leads.

Now we just have to get over the latter.

Arechiga is on Facebook, I think.

Also Will Cottrell may still be able to get you a copy. PM me and I’ll get you his contact.

Yeah, thanks for the suggestion to reach out to Mike on Facebook! I just sent him a message this morning. If I don't hear back from him in a day or two, I'll definitely reach out for Will's contact info.

Oh man, we knew it was going to be hot and it didn't disappoint. Totally worth it though!
I knew I had to bring more to the table than just some text. I even read the instructions on how to post a photo, and I never read the instructions  ;D

Thanks again for all the help! My partner and I are planning on putting time into Pinnacles this winter. I'll post some updates in the future.

Is this John Harlin III?  Whose father John Harlin died on Eiger North Face in 1966?
