Because the electric guitar hadn't been invented.

Martha likes it.

Vicki's dad loved 1950s and 1960s jazz. It's good stuff.

Just does not seem possible coming from an old, fat, white guy.  But, Damn!

I like Take Five (always have) but I never have been a big fan of improv jazz. I understand and appreciate what they are doing musically but I prefer my jazz melodic. When it comes to improv there is really no room for squares. Of course some might say I must be out to lunch.

My first and early exposure to the Blues was live and the sets almost always had improv (jam) sessions.   With the exposure I just thought that was the way it is.  After a while I came to realize that it is not always there.  I am not really into the more advanced crazy Jazz but I am getting to like this stuff more and more.

There are tons of good players who passed through Horace Silver’s group throughout his Blue Note catalog.  The same can be said for Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers.  Any member of these groups who recorded their own sessions as leaders is worth checking out.

When I first moved to the Bay Area Deacon Jones would, for the most part, play every weekend at JJ's in Mountain View.  They had a BBQ in the back parking lot.  First live music I watched outside of Rock Concerts.  I thought he was amazing and every once in a while that place would get extra busy when some "guest" would show up.  I wish I knew who those people were since I had no idea Deacon Jones was a well known musician.  If I was in town I would head over for a beer and sometimes BBQ.  This guy was great.  He and his organ fell off the stage once when he was really getting into one of this jam sessions.

I did not realize he passed away until looking his name up online just now.

I don't always fall, but when I do, my organs go with me.

Since I've been stuck at home with a cold, I've been spending time near the Rhine River (vicariously, in my game room, of course).

And I've turned to the jazz songs in my music collection thanks to this thread. Mostly 1980s stuff (multiple albums each of Pat Metheny and Bob James, for example). And lots too of classic 1960s stuff like Booker T and also Herb Alpert.

I'd like it even better if it would make the snot go away  ;)
