It's Wagon Wheel out on the Gargoyle... you put a bolt in after the crack peetered out.

Edit: The name in the guide is "I'll be back Crack 5.8".

Just finished four more days on the PCT with my two favorite girls (three really, Madeleine counts too). We did 55 miles in perfect to cold weather, including one 20 mile day. We're now at my sister-in-law's for the holiday. I'll do a PCT trip report later.

Meanwhile, I realized that I'd forgotten to post up the few scans that were worth posting from the last group of 100. An early Sierra summit for Katie (Black Mountain out of Virginia Lakes):

Mungeclimber on a very early ascent of Hell Nino, Potter's Rock, Sonora Pass Highway:

On the summit of North Peak after soloing the north ridge with Jim Lundeen. Saddlebag Lake in the background:

Leading D.M.Z. at the Gong Show area, Rock Creek Canyon:

That's it for scanned slides now until I do another batch.

Oh, and Factor, now that I know where it is, that photo of me is on what we called  Outback Waggin' (while we thought it was an FA). I think that 3 of us that day had Subaru Outbacks. Turned out Jack had done the FA a few years before. He was totally gracious about the bolt I placed on his route (I did this, of course, without knowing the route had been done). He suggested I should leave it in place, which I did. But, obviously it was his to name.

It's been pretty cool on the site lately: some newer, younger climbers are posting and with great content.

Meanwhile one of my original climbing mentors, Charles Field (call him Footie though) is going through his old climbing photo collections. Some of the shots he's sending me as his "best" border on unbelievable - almost all of the climbers depicted are now 70 years of age or older. But they aren't that old in the photos he's sending.

Maybe some of these should serve as friendly, loving reminders to the younger crowd: you think your youth will last forever? Live it up while you can; these climbers did.

I'll start with one from 1978. Dave Harden (on the right, most of you have climbed with him), Charles Field himself (on the left, some of you have climbed with him), and Bart O'Brien back on the Valley Floor having just climbed the Grade V on Quarter Dome:

These three have all been climbing for over 50 years. And each has partnered with the others in climbing for over 50 years. They're all 71 years old or older.

You youngsters? Your time is coming.

Footie cleaning the last or second to last pitch on Mescalito, 1984:

One with a story. Per Footie: Dave & Ben Schiffrin on Lost Arrow Direct, 1981. I rappelled down to the notch with dinner and a fixed rope so they could do the tyrolean in the morning. When they didn't show up by late afternoon and I realized I had an extra length of rope, I rappelled out of the notch and found them. At first they didn't know I was there. I scared the shit out of them when I called out.

By the way, Ben is the author of the current Northern California PCT guidebook.

Dave and Bart on top of Fairview Dome (probably) early 1970s. Is it just me or does Dave's hair resemble that of a certain young poster here who is currently about the same age that Dave is in this photo?

Not really from "back in the day," but for comparison to the above. A 50 year time span between photos (and they're even in the same order, left to right):

^^^

As much leg as me, as much curly hair as Marco. All in one photo. What else are we seeing? Notice the climbing boots on Dave? Boots, not shoes.

Here starts a series of back in the day shots that are not of me, or Dave, Footie or Bart. The shots were supplied to me by a person who rarely posts here. He's promised to (try) to come on and explain/give dates for each shot.

Feel free to guess who's who as we wait for him to post (one at a time so he can just "quote function" my post and then put in his explanation):
