Crazy Training Rides...
« on: July 21, 2008, 10:33:15 AM »
 Only the good ones!  :)

From my home: up Highway 9, down to Boulder Creek, up through Big Basin, back up Highway 9, down Redwood Gulch/Stevens Canyon, up Foothill, then Portola Valley Loop and then back home... Good times! And only 108.25 miles with somewhere on the upside of 6500 feet of climbing. Left home at 6:32 on Saturday and finished at 2:30 in the afternoon.

Well, I would have gone farther but I had plans for the afternoon...

The Dark Knight, of course! That was a pretty damned good movie.

Saw it last week. F/X were cool and it had some funny moments, but the plot wasn't exactly...complex. Definitely NOT Pan's Labyrinth.

I watched the Tour both days! Did laps between the couch and frig. Then a series of one arm curles.

Tough weekend.  ;D

Finally, another training ride worthy of adding to this topic!  :-*

Went for a long training ride with Joan (and a few friends: Conrad, Leslie and Claudia). We left Joan's place at 7:00 to meet the others at Bike Outfitters at 7:30. Everyone else was late, so we started just before 8:00. We rode from there up Foothill to Alpine, and then over to Old La Honda (my time was 23:15 for the ascent without pushing too extremely hard...). From there, we headed down 84 to San Gregorio. From there, Joan and I split off from the others (they didn't want too much climbing!). We headed south on Stage Road to Pescadero, and from there up and over Haskins Hill and then up Alpine Road. From there, we headed north on Skyline and then down 84 into Woodside. Then we headed out to the end of Canada and back home. And only one flat tire! I got a front flat at the last stop sign coming south on Canada before Woodside (I was fortunate: Conrad got 4!). 121 miles and perhaps 7000 feet of climbing...

Ours were not as crazy as yours, but the crazy part is in the difference between the following two rides:

Let's just say there were some ineffective communications that took place.  ;)
Inch by inch, I will get there.

What's the story? Did you send Erik off in the wrong direction?

Mud got a flat 10 miles before the end. We were climbing Trinity Road. I kept going. Once at the summit, it was really close to the end, so I still kept going. When I got to the car, I realized that I did not have the key. I stretched, stretched, and stretched. At that point, I knew Mud must have made a wrong turn. I wasn't worried because we still had plenty of day light. There was very light traffic in the area, although the roads were not completed deserted either. He would make it back one way or another. So, I took a pleasant nap in a quiet alley way near our car like a homeless person.

We each had a hand-written (by me) note like this one below for directions. It was clear to me: L for left, R for right, and arrow for continue on. He mistook the arrow for a right turn and did not look back to check the road signs, so where he should have continued on Oakville Grade, he made a right on Dry Creek Rd. It kept going until it deadended somewhere in Napa. Oops.

Each of us did the ride on one water bottle. I guess it was harder on Mud since his ride was almost 20 miles longer.

It pays to actually read the piece of paper versus looking at it seeing a road name then riding until you see that road name, turning, riding for a while looking at the paper again, stuffing the paper back into your shorts and riding.  Then after a bit going Hmmmm, why isn't there an Oakville on this here map that is pasted on the side of this gas station.

Here's to sweat in your eye

Here's the ride from this past Saturday...

Essentially it was an out-and-back up into Burlingame (just past what we call The Manatees (a home with sculptures of manatees in the front yard)). On the way back we climbed Kings Mountain and went down 84 back into Woodside. Also, we added 4 miles on Foothill to increase the ride distance to over 100 miles. 101 miles, and perhaps 4500 feet of climbing.
