48 hours on the bike... =)
« on: September 16, 2008, 12:44:07 PM »
I actually finished the HooDoo 500. it took 47:41:00 to get it done, and there were certainly a few moments when I thought that I was finished. But I held out and finished within the 48hour time limit. I finished 8th place out of 15 starters (only 9 people finished, one after the cutoff).

Later I will write a blog on the experience, but I can't quite wrap my mind around what I did yet. So that will have to wait another day or two... This picture sort of sums up the joy of finishing...  :)

 Here are some pictures:

There's absolutely no way that I could have finished without the encouragement from Joan up high on the climb over Cedar Breaks (10,626 feet!). That was suffering in it's finest form. Blaring my favorite band (The Proclaimers) out the window of the support vehicle was pure genius as well...

Good to hear you found a fantastic woman.  Any woman that will stick with you through everything it takes to complete a race like like that is a true companion.

Congrats on all.

I did read Ultramarathonman... Excellent stuff! I'm currently reading Karnazes' second book, 5050 (about running 50 marathons in 50days in 50 states).

I can also brag a little on her now as well...

Joan came in 6th place among the women at the Furnace Creek 508 last weekend (out of 14 entrants). Of the gals who finished ahead of her: 1st place has won RAAM, 2nd place has won Ultraman (which is a double Ironman Triathlon), 3rd place is a world class adventure racer, 4th place won the 508 in 2007), and 5th place is a past RAAM winner). So to come in 6th to such company says something!

I'm sure that she can win The 508... Just give her a couple of years of solid training. I just hope that I can keep up!  ;)

Total time was 36:22, and if the FC508 was still a RAAM Qualifier she would have qualified...

That is very impressive!!! Congratulations to your gf!  Wow, what a team you two make! It's awesome that you found each other. Nothing beats having a significant other who understands and helps your realize your crazy dreams.  :D

Now, I do have you, F'ueco, to blame though. Mud suddenly started talking about maybe doing Hoodoo 500 or Furnace Creek 508 some day. That's some crazy talk!  ::)
Inch by inch, I will get there.

Do it!

Do it as a two-person team if the full 500 seems like too big a step. Do some double centuries. They are great fun!

Crazy dreams are only crazy until you fulfill them. Then you can go for new ones.  ;D
