F'ueco.....you ride the SS cross off-road? I followed a guy up the 4 mile climb at Lemurian on a Surly SS cross. Burly.I love my SS but it's got phat 2.3 Conti's.

I do... I can just barely crank it up some of the hills. That should get easier as the bike gets lighter (upgrades still in progress).

Total weight appears to be a hair over 18 pounds (I need a more precise scale to tell for sure), though that will decrease almost down to 17 pounds when I get my new wheels (ROL Volant).

17 pounds? I'm soooo jealous.  I don't get it. You have a steel frame. Why is it still so much lighter than my Specialized Tarmac, which has a small carbon fiber frame. Besides missing the little chain ring, what else makes your bike so light?

Well if you take a close look at his components they are all fairly light.  Your bike is not much heavier than his if you take everything off of it.  If you put a carbon seat post, lightweight saddle and light weight bars you are done around 17 lbs.  swap out the 105 components with ultegra and save another 3/4 of a pound.  Swap out the wheelset for some SpeedDreams and you save another 1/2 pound or more.

 I'm sure that if you had the same components on your Tarmac you'd be down below 16 pounds, no problem... My frame weighs a touch over 4 pounds, and my fork is a full carbon cyclocross one (the road version weights about 1/4 pound less).

 On another note: my new wheels shipped today, so with a little luck I will be able to ride them this weekend...

 So far, I've done two major-pain-in-the-ass rides on the Rock Lobster and I have to say that it has performed beautifully. I did have a couple of minor mechanical problems, but nothing that wasn't my own fault (I didn't tighten the front shifter cable all the way and it slipped on me during the Mount Tam Double yesterday).

 I just need a slightly shorter stem and the fit will be perfect.   

 Oh, and the ROL wheels are BY FAR the best wheels I have ever ridden...
