Castle Rock old school regular rip
« on: December 09, 2022, 10:23:00 PM »
Charlie Milligan - he was a regular. Would crank hard moves and make it look easy.

Have a recollection of talking about Rangers and Castle up there one day.

True love for Castle.

I just found out from Squiddo that Charlie Milligan recently passed away.
What a bummer, to lose him far too early

Growing up through the ‘90’s I’d bump into “Charlie” at Castle Rock and the Pinnacles.
A Castle, he would be wearing Sandals and send various Boulder problems and routes.

One time I was taking a date climbing at castle rock.
I had setup a top rope on an easy crack to tie up-hill side from the waterfall.

I heard a noise from above….down climbs Charlie in sandals.

“Hey Charlie how goes it?”

Needless to say my date was a bit surprised.

Another gem….
It was ‘94-95. Me and my 2x high school buddies were in the Meadows climbing.
We had just returned to the car from climbing West Crack.
Note: Charlie had mentored 1 partner in the 80’s.

Up pulls into the parking this huge Jeep pickup truck.
It’s Charlie, with this long haired scraggly blonde guy.

Hey Charlie, what’s up?

“I like to sleep amongst the Domes”

Fast forward many years to 2002?
Chatting with Mr Mud about meadows routes.
He tells a story about climbing Hemispheres on Fairview with a partner Charlie.

Wait a minute, that long haired guy was Mr Mud!

Small world!

If I am remembering the correct Charlie, he used to climb at Pinnacles regularly with Mike Arechiga. I'd see them on the East Side at least a few times per season, usually on the same routes I always saw them on (all on Discovery Wall and The Monolith).

One day in talking to them, I asked them if they ever did any other routes that those I usually saw them on. "No," they said. They had 11 favorite routes and that was basically what they climbed every time they were there. This pattern was so, so different from how I climbed at Pinnacles that I laughed. And then they laughed and then we all laughed together. They always seemed to be having a lot of fun.

To each their own.

Yup that was the same Charlie!
Some of their routes:
Stupid Man
Verdict
Melvin
Foreplay
POD

Here is another gem:

Me, Mungie? and UberGoober were at planet granite climbing.
We see Charlie.

This was right after Uber had gotten his new tattoo.

Charlie “nice design, love it. Doesn’t the ink fade?”

BaBam!!!

Charlie Tree!  That's how Mr. Mud and I call him.

One time I climbed with Charlie (and Mike Arechiga); it was on a trip to Pinnacles. I remember we were in a vehicle that seemed too big for just three people. I think we climbed Stupendous Man, Verdict, Melvin, etc. He was fun to talk to.

RIP, Charlie.
Inch by inch, I will get there.

Bummed to hear the news.

When I climbed obsessively at Castle Rock in the early 2000's I would often run into Charlie and Mr Castle Rock (Archeiga).

One time I was on my mellow circuit and walking down from Shady Rock to The Muffins and there they were hitting the bong. I commented on how cool that steep crack was on the muffins and he proceeded to solo way up into a madrone tree and setup a top rope by just throwing the rope over a fork in the tree. We had a blast climbing that crack and taking bong hits.

I miss running into those dudes. I think Mike is now up near Oakhurst or something. Does anyone know?

Anyhow RIP Charlie Tree.
