Henry Coe State Park January 17, 2015

Just a few snaps from my ride last weekend…

A typical shot of Hoover Lake but compared to last time I was here, the change was dramatic:

.

There were some high winds in December but there were fewer fallen trees than I expected. A large one on Laurel Trail that I'll deal with. Amazingly, just one on Live Oak Spring Trail (there's usually a lot here). I found 3 on Pacheco Creek Trail. Here's one I fixed:

.

Being here at dusk means a night ride down the Grizzly Gulch Trail is imminent:

.

Some Hound's Tongue flowers in spot-light of my helmet light:

On my way out the Coyote Creek Gate I stopped and chatted with Mark and Dan (?) who were back from a burly ride.

The next day I found that my bottom bracket bearings were semi-seized. I wondered if they were like that on the ride? The hills did seem like a lot of effort but Coe is normally that way!

Today's ride was very similar to last week's so I'll just append this thread. I didn't stop to take a photo last week of this fallen tree on Laurel Trail:

My self-assigned task for this ride was to clean it up as much as possible:

That's a little easier to pass through now.

After riding by this a hundred times, today I noticed the Pacheco Camp garbage dump...lots of broken bottles and rusty barbed wire, etc.:

….hmmm, maybe not so special.

Caught the sunset at the crest of Jackson Road. A Jackson/Anza night-ride downhill finished the day. Another amazing warm January day!

p.s. More Jan 24 Coe photos from my friend Patrick.

Back to Laurel Trail with the big saw to finish this up. My new trailwork accessory is the yellow felling wedge which holds the gap open to prevent the saw from getting pinched:

.

Done!

.

A couple of nearby trails, Canteen and Dog, surprisingly were recently brushed so I checked them out. They have some very steep sections so it was an effort but there is rain coming so who knows when I could get back.

The signpost for Canteen Trail:

.

I walked up this, steeper than it looks:

.

The afternoon was warm, humid, and very dreary. Top of Dog Trail:

.

Dog Trail goes straight over the top of a couple steep knobs:

It may look like you can go around the knobs, but you can't.

.

Wildlife sighting earlier in the day:

It may look like you can go around the knobs, but you can't.

What you mean, "you can't" go around? Remember? We did it 4.5 years ago!

The descent of it was fun.
Inch by inch, I will get there.

Remember?
I was recalling that ride when I was out there yesterday. That was a great day! Quiz for you; where did we have dinner and who joined us? Ha, nevermind, I see the answers are in your report.

Always look forward to your ride reports!!  Thanks so much for the trail work on Laurel Trail.  Also considered Coe for a Wednesday ride, but considering the crippling mechanical failures I had on my own ride, I'm happy not to have ended up deep in Coe with a barely rideable bike!  Beautiful pics, thanks for sharing!!
