clink took me out for an introductory tour...
Fun day with nice temps, solitude and a whole different feel both in area, technique and medium.
You may hear reports of some weird guy in safety glasses and an orange shirt wandering around the area

We started at CA Ridge where I did my first greywacke lead - Band Aids on Road Rash - great way to start the day





From there we went to Chew Tooth and I led the crack...clink said he thought I might get some air time on a few of the moves...I believe burly was thrown around repeatedly

and we finished at Platypus where I got shut down on Plat-a-Pussy

Is Greywacke the right label for the CRSP sandstone?

Yep - as far as I know it's the Vaqueros Formation - early Oligocene ~ 30 million years old. There is also another prominent greywacke unit in the SC mtns - the San Lorenzo Formation - supposedly distinguished by its abundant big rounded concretions - nice examples in Sanborn County Park. I thought I saw some softball-size concretions at Platypus too, so that may or may not be a deal breaker - not that uncommon in sedimentary rocks - typically just a concentration of mineral cement. Are you snoring yet?

not at all. I had just thought the greywacke had lots of little detritus (seashells? whitish on otherwise grey colored rock), whereas the CRSP sandstone was pretty much just sand. Assumed they were different types. Maybe having only heard Vaqueros Sandstone, I assumed it was a separate category distinct from greywacke.

Don't snore yet. Tricia and I took a shot yesterday of some very pink and interesting talus up by Highway 4. We took the shot just for you (J.C.). I'll post it in the next "PCT" trip report installment.

No worries - Vaqueros is the name of the formation as is San Lorenzo (both greywackes) - greywacke is sandstone with 15% or more mud - what I call dirty sandstone - this is undoubtedly more appealing to mud masters and choss wranglers than greywacke's cleaner cousins  - arkose and arenite
