Henry Coe State Park May 7, 2014

Goodbye Coe

My first official trailwork day in Coe was on the remote Mississippi Ridge Trail. June 10, 2006. That was the last or next-to-last day of a long project to clear that trail. A couple friends had recently ridden it, seemed like a good ride idea. See how it is in 2014. Greg could ride mid-week but had to be back in time to pick up his kids in San Jose at 6pm. I convinced him that we could do this within his time window...well, it wasn't too hard to convince him!

We agreed to meet at 8:30am but Greg might start early. And he did:

He had a 35 minutes head start. It was cool, windy, overcast, and I was feeling pretty good. The miles went by relatively easy. At Willson Camp there is a project going on to rehab a nearby pond. (I chatted with one of the workers.)

The Springtime scenery is fading but these yellow flowers on the Pacheco Creek Trail were great!

I reached our rendezvous point, Willow Ridge & Pacheco Ridge roads, at 12:10pm. Greg had scratched a message in the dirt that he was there at 11:52, was going ahead and would do some brushing to kill time. After a quick lunch, I found Greg in no time:

The trail is now very overgrown, it goes in the "where the trail sheds you!" category. By the end we were both scratched up. I took a tumble and had a scraped knee and slightly bruised ribs. It was great to do that trail but it took a toll.

We were done before 1:30 so we had plenty of time for the return trip.

Ugh, the roadgrader had totally messed-up the tread on Live Oak Spring Road:

Greg can talk me into riding trails which I normally avoid, here we go up Serpentine:

Greg cresting Serpentine with a wheelie is an appropriate Goodbye Coe shot:

Greg will be moving to Boulder, CO at the end of July. This may have been his last ride at Coe. :-(

We were back at Hunting Hollow at 4:10pm so Greg was ahead of schedule. I went back out and did a Jim Donnelly/Spike Jones/Timm loop; ran into Steve "Congzilla" from the 2006 HecticMetric solstice ride (because I just run into people on the trails).

Wow, almost missed this one. Hope your ribs feel better soon, Charlie! Trail work can be dangerous too! Thanks for the hard work!

Sorry to see Greg go! But if anywhere, Boulder is a good choice. I let out a sigh of relief that you did not say Goodbye to Coe.

Inch by inch, I will get there.
