Am I listening to Jazz?
-
Because the electric guitar hadn't been invented.
Martha likes it.
-
Martha has good taste.
She must not climb at the Pins.
-
Vicki's dad loved 1950s and 1960s jazz. It's good stuff.

Just does not seem possible coming from an old, fat, white guy. But, Damn!
-
One last one for the day. I think the kid off to the side is thinking "Oh Shit"

I like Take Five (always have) but I never have been a big fan of improv jazz. I understand and appreciate what they are doing musically but I prefer my jazz melodic. When it comes to improv there is really no room for squares. Of course some might say I must be out to lunch.
-
My first and early exposure to the Blues was live and the sets almost always had improv (jam) sessions. With the exposure I just thought that was the way it is. After a while I came to realize that it is not always there. I am not really into the more advanced crazy Jazz but I am getting to like this stuff more and more.

I like jazz.

I like jazz.
I like carrots :yesnod:

See you move up north and you start to get weird.
Next thing you know you start to shave...
And i like Carrots!

There are tons of good players who passed through Horace Silver’s group throughout his Blue Note catalog. The same can be said for Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Any member of these groups who recorded their own sessions as leaders is worth checking out.

This guy was the drummer for count Basie. Mesmerizing.

When I first moved to the Bay Area Deacon Jones would, for the most part, play every weekend at JJ's in Mountain View. They had a BBQ in the back parking lot. First live music I watched outside of Rock Concerts. I thought he was amazing and every once in a while that place would get extra busy when some "guest" would show up. I wish I knew who those people were since I had no idea Deacon Jones was a well known musician. If I was in town I would head over for a beer and sometimes BBQ. This guy was great. He and his organ fell off the stage once when he was really getting into one of this jam sessions.
I did not realize he passed away until looking his name up online just now.
-
I don't always fall, but when I do, my organs go with me.

Since I've been stuck at home with a cold, I've been spending time near the Rhine River (vicariously, in my game room, of course).
And I've turned to the jazz songs in my music collection thanks to this thread. Mostly 1980s stuff (multiple albums each of Pat Metheny and Bob James, for example). And lots too of classic 1960s stuff like Booker T and also Herb Alpert.
I'd like it even better if it would make the snot go away ;)
-
I have heard that Jazz makes the snot flow better

Since I am at work.

Not so far....
-
I'm a classical musician, amateur but not too bad. Jazz has always amazed and intimidated me. It's definitely not intended for snot removal. I recommend the 1812 Overture for that. The cannons work every time.
-
Hey Waldo, I did not know you were a musician. What instrument?
-
The cannons
;D

Thanks to this thread (and a re-awakenied interest in my jazz music), I've listened more than once to Manhattan Transfer's "Extensions" album in the last week.
Jazz, pseudo-jazz, almost-jazz. Call it what you want, but that album absolutely rocks (pun intended). Their version of Birdland (with vocals) has always been my favorite (Weather Report's is second favorite).
-
Interesting and thanks for the insight. Will take a listen.

Sounds like Mr Mud needs an intervention with AC/DC and scorpions.

It could be worse...country and Western.
Maybe Mungie could share some of his music off of his Zune player..

Anyone who doesn't like Johnny Cash is as un-American as, well, as someone who hates mustard.

Scorpions for life!!!

A simple truth very well said.

Munge defines playlist.
Knot tying is a skill. Knot untying is art.

I'm a trombone player - sixty years now and still getting better, or so I believe.

Meanwhile Tricia played Taps at the military portion of her grandpa's funeral two Saturdays ago. Just her and her trumpet. And she absolutely nailed it. Grandpa (a Marine officer) would have been so damn proud.
Vicki's got a recording of it on her phone, but I don't know how to post it here.

And George Duke with Zappa is always good

That's the toughest solo going. It's wonderful that she played it for her grandpa.

Talkin' music...
Scored tickets to the Todd Rundgren (who?) show at the Rio theater tomorrow night in Santa Cruz.
Should be a cool show full of surprises.
Just finished figuring out a tune from Graham Nash's Songs for Beginners. Fun chord progression and tough vocals. No wonder the other members of CSN call him Razor Throat   :yesnod: :guitar: :blahblah:

Have a grand time at the Rio!

Have a grand time at the Rio!
We got backstage for Kat's birthday in 2007 at The Catalyst. She had a friend from work that knew one of the bouncers.

That guy needs to get back to work and stop banging on the drum all day.
