Because it is possible that newly registered members might miss the approval notice, we'll make a public announcement whenever we approve a new member.
Everyone already onboard is welcome to join us to welcome our future new members getting onboard. Nobody here is a grumpy old man who likes to scare away new comers, right?
That reminded me... Mud was telling me about someone they interviewed for work but did not hire because the guy was kind of a dork, having no social skills. I jabbed, "look who's talking." He laughed, "I have social skills. I'm someone that everyone hates to like."
Don't you all hate to like him? ;D

Otzisan, we start with you. Welcome to the forum!

I have social skills.
Since when were these a requirement?

If you are taking a vote - my vote is yea.
I would join in the welcome but it would likely result in getting the cold shoulder. :puke:

Kat and I talked to a lot of people on the east side yesterday. The vast majority of them were carrying Brad's guidebook around and we were acting as climbing docents and hiking advisors :thumb up:
We let several parties know about some of the great new areas out there.
We also took a hike through the upper part of the Cave trail beneath the Monolith. We had never actually done that before and it will only be open for a few weeks. Lots of stepping stones with flowing water and fun squeezes through tight spots.
It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood

Yeah! I noticed that was open last weekend too. Super fun!

It really puzzles me...
There have been way too many registrations (email and IPs look pretty legit) who never post. What's the point of registering then. No biggie, but I fail to understand...
-
It's Mungie climber. He must have some sort of plot to take over the forum.
-
More people are shy than we account for. I used to be.

Perhaps there is just soooo much information here that people just search and read instead of posting new questions and engaging.
Lurkers are people too!
-
sophisticated bots on zombie machines that legit IPs?
-
No, the question was not meant to criticize. I was just puzzled because the forum can be read by anyone. Lurk to your heart's content, and you don't need to be a registered user for that.
In my mind, one will go through the trouble of registering only because they have an urge to say something. Because of that understanding, I always try to approve a new registration as fast as I can. I'll pull over on the side of the road if needed to. But then most of these new registrations never return. And I don't think they are mostly bots because even when I try to approve fast, I do my extreme vetting and usually the information checks out fine. Occasionally, I can even find the real person.
As I said, it's just a mystery to me.
-
Would it be better to open up the search feature to allow anyone to search the forum instead of having to be a registered user? That may be the main reason you have many people registering, but not actively taking part in the forum.
-

Yo, cultural attache, you get ten seconds (and no recourse to the internet): Who first said your quote and what did he say it about? :o

Good point. I just opened up the search to guests as well. Thanks for pointing that out, Sean! It escaped me as members here are forever logged in, so we don't experience the pain. Let's see if that makes a difference.
-
oh bummer. That means posts are now indexed by the search engines, along with time and date stamps, yes?
-
you mean publicly indexed.
-
Mungie smells like salty balls!
So now Google has preserved that statement?
-
you mean publicly indexed.
sure, but to say that is redundant. Search 'engines' are public tools, which is not the same as an index in a db.
-
F4? WELCOME TO THE FORUM!!!!!!!
-
Thanks Noal, it's great to join a forum with so few people who know so much about the Pinnacles.
I hope to gain valuable, yet semi-worthless information..
Maybe the Admin will sponsor Clint to post up?
-

All sites are indexed it is just a matter of whether or not the data is shows up in search engines

I’m real! I climbed at Pinnacles on Tuesday and I love it! I had climbed there once 20+ years ago when I was a noob and remember enjoying it but being terrified leading some multi pitch 5.8. Now that I’ve had more experience with cobbles, I really enjoyed it. Also, I lost a small blue wallet with my credit card and driver’s license. It was either at the Discovery Wall or Monolith east face. If any one happens to find it, please contact me either here or my email is my user name at gmail. Thanks!

Welcome.
Thanks! Erstwhile climber here joining the forum on behalf of my 10-year-old actual climber who's been loving Pinnacles climbing. Mostly focused on the Monolith last season. Looking forward to returning this year when temps get bearable. What month does it start cooling off enough to start planning trips? October/November?

Sorry that you did not get responses. I was wondering if the true Pinnacles veterans had input on this for you, but maybe it's just hard for anyone to predict the weather that far in advance. My guess is it will be okay to visit in October/November, if you are flexible to pick locations based on the weather. There are shady/cool climbs for hot days. For cold days, unless it's raining, you can definitely find sunny routes. Congrats on having a young kid who enjoys outdoors!

If you watch the recent conversations, you may realize that this site is like a camp fire that's been burning for too long. Please set expectations accordingly -- meaning, as low as the deep sea.
But otherwise, welcome! ;)

John is right, especially this time of year when most of us are avoiding Pinnacles’ heat. And as a new member, it’s probably difficult to think of anything to post to start a thread.
What about this idea, John: look through some of the older threads, especially those for Pinnacles and/or Everywhere Else. There’s some fantastic information in those parts of the forum, even going way back. If something grabs your interest, try reviving the thread? Who knows, information or questions about an old route? Your own ideas or experience on it?
It’s a good crew here, but we can be pretty insular. If you post though it gives us a way to include you in?

Maybe I can get lucky and be able to come climb next weekend. Not sure yet. But then that's odd because I basically have to get lucky and find someone willing to drag a noob up a bunch of easy routes. Like "Hi, can lead up to 5.7 outdoors but no quick draws or trad gear. Do have rope and anchor building gear for top ropes. Anybody want to come out and let me bum your gear and we climb some 5.7 and below?" I don't know, I just kinda rolled my eyes at the "cut the non-posters" thing when there is very little recent to post about. And yes, I have read back through posts to get info for coming out.
-
It's dang hot out there. Might be tough to find some to climb with but hang in there cooler days will be here before we know it. Then we can freeze our asses off.

Yeah I know it's hot. But in like ~5 weeks I'm gone for around 3 months, so trying to get the climbing in while I can.
